Tell me a bit about the history of The End Of The Ocean
Bryan and Kevin started the band as an ambient project at the beginning of 2009. Josh, Chris and Cameron jumped on board to make it a full band so we could further develop into the sound that we really wanted. We recorded an EP titled “Calm Seas Don’t Make Sailors” in September of the same year. That EP received some great reviews and we felt like it was something that we really wanted to pursue full time. While we spent the next year writing for “PACIFIC•ATLANTIC”, we went through some small member changes as Cameron left and Bryan’s wife Tara joined. We recorded “PACIFIC•ATLANTIC” with Grant Beachey at Electric Angel Studios in Goshen Indiana late January of this year and then released the album through Future Recordings on March 1st. We’re now focusing our attention on touring and writing some new music.
How was your experience with Grant at Electric Angel?
Grant is an amazing producer to work with. He’s got a ton of great ideas and is super patient with the recording process. He allows for creative freedom and really pushes the boundaries. He made the entire time easy on us and we can’t wait to go back to him again when were ready to record our next album.
You recently released PACIFIC•ATLANTIC on March 1st on Future Recordings. What kind of response have you received on the road?
Our last tour was really awesome. We went out by ourselves and met a lot of great people. We were able to play with some really incredible bands as well. Since we’re still relatively new, it was great to see all the people who came out to see us. It is a great feeling to hear from the people who came to see us about what our music meant to them. Touring is pretty much our favorite thing about this band and we love playing in new places and meeting so many new people along the way.
What future tours are you looking forward to this summer?
We’re headed out next week with some of our best friends in Sunlight Ascending. We’ll be out for about 2 weeks and playing 10 states. We’re really excited for this tour. Sunlight is an incredible band and some of the nicest kids you’ll ever meet. We are also headed out at the end of July for a few dates and then looking to do some more touring at the end of the summer as well.
What are the essential things you bring on the road?
Lots of music, Peanut Butter Twix, Arizona Arnold Palmer, CB Radio, Books, AAA card, and as much money as we can for when our van inevitably breaks down.
In regards to writing, how do you guys feed off each other?
We each have our own various influences so it’s a lot of fun to write with each other. Typically Josh or Kevin will have a riff and then we just build off of that, slowly growing the riff into a full song. Everybody gets a chance to allow their parts to shine through so it’s a great collaboration amongst all of us.
Are any international tours in the works?
Right now we are talking with a booking agent about going to Europe in the Fall. We’ve also been invited to play in China next year. We’ll see how it goes (this stuff gets really expensive when you don’t have a lot of financial support from a label like a lot of other bands do and have to go it alone) but we’re very excited for these opportunities!
What do you do different to set yourself apart from other post rock/instrumental bands?
Honestly, we don’t really try to set ourselves apart from anyone else in the genre. We definitely have our own sound but we don’t really go out of our way to try to break the mold of post-rock. Post-Rock is what it is for a reason. There are a lot of people who review post-rock albums and bands and say that they’re the typical sound and format of post-rock like it’s a bad thing. We wanted to start a post-rock band for the very reason that we enjoy the “formula” of post-rock. We definitely don’t want to stay stagnant in the genre and we do put a lot of heart and passion into this band but post-rock is post-rock and we love developing our sound around that very fact.
